The Green Deacon Cocktail

I’m making cocktails today and starting with the Green Deacon. There are some drinks I love immediately, then there are those that take time. I can’t say that I honestly love the Green Deacon cocktail, but I do keep coming back to it. From PDT genius, Jim Meehan, the Green Deacon is a play on the Rosy Deacon cocktail with different proportions and an absinthe rinse.

The recipe is straight forward enough:

♦ 1.5 oz Plymouth gin

♦ 1 oz grapefruit juice

♦ .75 oz Plymouth Sloe Gin

Shake with ice, then strain into an absinthe-rinsed coupe. No garnish was included in the original recipe, although I like a sliver of grapefruit peel.

I’ve specified Plymouth here because it’s what PDT specifies (they even specify my current favorite absinthe, St. George) but I’m not sure if it matters much to the overall drink. Of course, use fresh grapefruit juice.

I am a huge fan of gin drinks, I have a bit of an obsession with the flavors of absinthe, sloe gin rocks my world, but the grapefruit sits oddly with me. I can’t tell if it’s too much or too little? I may play with a Rosy Deacon as well since a recipe I saw on-line used equal parts gin and sloe gin, and even more grapefruit juice. Maybe this is one of those drinks I’ll have to play with until I get the proportions exactly how I like. It’s not like that hasn’t happened before! And if you’ve made a Green Deacon and have any tips, I’d love the feedback and insight.
